Supplements for Mental Clarity
As we age, we tend to experience memory loss and diminished concentration. Sometimes this leads to dementia. On the extreme side of this is Alzheimer's disease, a degenerative brain disorder that begins with short-term memory impairment, confusion and difficulty performing simple tasks, eventually leading to loss of memory, personality changes and speech problems.
Scientists don't know what causes Alzheimer's or how to cure it. However, they are making progress in treating symptoms and delaying the progression of the disease. The following supplements may help improve one's mental clarity and may even play a role in dementia and Alzheimer's therapy.
Ginkgo biloba seems to improve both the nervous and circulatory systems. It increases the blood supply and therefore oxygen levels to the brain, which seems to improve mental clarity and memory. Coenzyme Q10 also seems to be beneficial to maintaining mental health. It protects the nerves, speeds up the metabolism, helps produce energy and acts as an antioxidant, all of which may slow the progression of Alzheimer's. Siberian ginseng (not to be confused with panax ginseng) and the Indian Ayurvedic herb gotu kola have also been credited for enhancing alertness, memory and learning capabilities.
An adequate dose of B vitamins, especially B6, may help and the antioxidants vitamin C, vitamin E and various carotenoids can also contribute to the maintenance of mental clarity.
